ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man was convicted and sentenced to life for killing a woman over $100, according to the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office.
On Jan. 26, a jury found Yusuf Minor guilty of malice murder, felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in the shooting death of Ja’Leesa May-Carter, the district attorney’s office announced Thursday.
The judge sentenced Minor to life in prison plus 25 years with the possibility of parole, the DA’s office said.
Prosecutors said that on Feb. 24, 2022, Minor left his cell phone on the counter of a Texaco gas station with a $100 bill in the case.
May-Carter and another woman, both of whom didn’t know Minor, reportedly took the money while they were checking out and left the station.
Minor returned to the store and confronted the clerk, demanding to watch the surveillance video, according to prosecutors.
He then followed the victims to an apartment complex, where he fired multiple rounds at them as they ran away, the DA’s office said.
May-Carter was discovered by the other woman “on the back patio of an apartment later that afternoon.” Prosecutors said May-Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Once again, justice has been served and we have removed a violent offender from our community,” Clayton County District Attorney Tasha M. Mosley said in a statement, adding: “We hope this conviction brings peace to the loved ones of Ms. May-Carter” and the other victim.
