Williams, now 23, spoke to confirm his name and date of birth, but was not asked to indicate a plea to the charge. Members of the wider family attended and became visibly upset during the brief hearing.

Henry Riding, prosecuting, and Chris Macmaster, defending, explained there was a technical legal issue relating to the defendant's bail conditions, and the case was adjourned for seven days for administrative issues to be ironed out. Williams will next appear in court on Thursday, January 25.

Paying tribute to Miss Cullen shortly after her death, family friend Paula McNally, 45, said: "She was my friend and her daughter is friends with my son. We've all known her for quite some time. She was just the life and soul of the party. She was bubbly, so positive and just chatty. She was just never a negative person."
