UPDATE 1/13/24 @ 5:30 p.m.

GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) --The obituary for 5-year-old Aubrey Stowers says she was a happy, sassy child who loved her siblings, loved riding her bike, and enjoyed listening to music and cuddling with her dog.

“It’s very sad to know a young girl that could’ve been thriving in life later is unfortunately deceased now,” Kentucky State Police Public Affaris Officer Shane Goodall said.

According to KSP, Aubrey was found dead at her home on Oak Street in Wurtland on June 17.

Aubrey’s mother Rachel Waddell and Waddell’s boyfriend Christopher Stiltner were arrested at the home Thursday and taken to the Greenup County Detention Center, troopers say.

According to a release from KSP, the grand jury determined there was enough evidence to issue indictment warrants for murder.

The indictments for both are worded the same, saying they were “engaging in conduct which created a grave risk of death to another person and thereby caused the death of a five-year-old child due to multiple blunt force injuries.”

“It’s hard on the victim’s family, and it’s also hard on the perpetrators’ families,” Goodall said. “A lot of people have been affected by this case

The arrests came half a year after the child’s death.

“We have to wait for tests to come back, which takes a long time,” Goodall said.

Goodall says if anyone ever sees signs of child abuse, never hesitate to reach out to law enforcement.

“A lot of times, children are afraid to speak out or they’re threatened not to speak out,” he said, “so they can’t really speak for themselves sometimes, so we do rely on other people to speak out for them.”The pair is set to be arraigned Thursday morning.
