FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - A man is facing charges after his child was shot when he was watching them. Around 8 p.m., police were called to a residence, where they found the child suffering from a gunshot wound.
The child was taken to the hospital and later died. Documents say Travell Daniels, 29, was watching his child after the mother dropped them off at the house. Four people were in the house, according to police, Daniels, Alexis Smith (Daniels' brother's girlfriend), and Smith's two young children.
Documents say Smith and her children were in her room.
Daniels told police he had gotten home around 3:30 p.m. and put his Glock 23 in his bedroom under his pillow. He said he always keeps the gun under his pillow and no one knows it is there. He also told police he normally keeps a round in the chamber but sometimes does not.
Documents say the victim came downstairs and started to get fussy, so Daniels gave the child a bottle of diluted apple juice and took the victim to his bedroom to lie down.
Daniels told police he held the child until they fell asleep, then he laid the child down on his bed, near the window, and went downstairs to watch television.
Documents say Daniels told police about seven to ten minutes later, he heard a loud bang and ran upstairs and found that the child had been shot. Daniels told police he was not sure how the child was shot.
Documents say Smith told police she was sleeping and woke up after hearing a loud pop, and when she came out of her room, Daniels was yelling for her to call an ambulance. Smith stayed in her room with her children until the police got there.
