Police have charged a suspect with murder after two women were fatally shot in a townhouse community in Apex.
Harry Bates Hardman, 37, appeared before Judge Ned Magnum on Tuesday afternoon. He was ordered to be held in jail without bail and was appointed a capital defender.
On Monday two women were shot around 3 p.m. outside a home on Chipping Drive, according to police. They were taken to the hospital with serious injuries and later died.
Police responding to the report heard more gunfire on Brussels Drive, which intersects with Chipping Drive.
Hardman, who lives on that street, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of the women. He is next expected to appear in court on Feb. 5.
Police also found a dog shot to death in the neighborhood. Hardman is also charged with one count of animal cruelty.
Grandmother one of those killed
Police have not released the names of the women killed.
Relatives identified one of them as Nancy Taylor and said she had moved into the community a few years ago to be near her grandchildren, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s news gathering partner.
The dog killed in the shooting was hers.
